My Mom on Music

My mom went on a tear last night in an email she sent to me and I thought it was pretty funny.   It's another classic non-punctuation middle of the night stream of consciousness rant email from my wonderful mother.  She cracks me up when she tries to get me to listen to Celine Dion.  I draw the line at Celine mom.  Apparently Celine's new album is the new hotness. ;)

My Moms email:

"you would find this amazing but for years i have had two steely dan  the decade of steely dan cd in either my cars or case and i have hung onto that cd for maybe fifteen years  it was very hot in the seventies

so there you have it the decade of steely dan comes around"

(I'm assuming she's referring to the fact that I posted a link to a Steely Dan on my Tunes list...)

"you must admit my era produced a hell of a lot more great music that this present era of crap rap  which is what i call it

crap rap is just some cultural crappy stuff for people who are not true musicians and are limited in the scope of what they can achieve as artists  music is is stuff of the beatles  or ask jj who just flew off to las vegas for elton john  now theres a musician or steely dan  or stan getz  or billie holiday and on and on

not these rap punkers who can only speak street talk and low life and try to elevate that to some form of musical hierarchy

their  music does not cut it as its base and pedestrian  and low and dark and angry and supports violence and puts women down and is vulgar and disgusting

to elevate music and to be a true musician is to have soul and soul is not about debasing humanity or screwing your grandmother  that sort of thing

if you listen to the new ray charles and yes even celines new baby cd or  the best of elton john  or that here comes the sun  the song jj walked out onto the beach  that music stirs your soul

think of a time and a piece of music that you relate to and what was happening to you at that time and then think to yourself

does rap and disgusting lyrics really make you a better person

no  it does not

do not support anything or anyone that refers to violence or anger or the need for gangs etc  or you  become part of the problem for listening and or buying this type of music

even britney spears in my opinion does not cut it  its basically canned crap

so go through your music  see what stands up and why

it will tell you a lot about yourself

In a way, you are so right.....
thats why music w\o lyrics can be so much better.
although the topics and vulgarity are rather abrasive, the present time we live in is too....
stevie wonder sang about the ghetto, just as crap rappers do. they had musical influences that can be heard in their music, and although it may not be nearly as moving as the musicians from a simpler way of life; they are still musicians. granted alot of it is complete shit, but it isn't easy makin a career in the ghetto, much more out of tasteless crap rap. so credit should be given to that. and brittany spears............complete shit!
